‘Foggiani’ Pilot’s Group
John J. Strickland trained as a pilot at Foggia, Italy, from November, 1917, to May, 1918 and remained there until transfered to England in September where he served as a Flight Instructor at the Handley Page Training Camp in Ford Junction, England. Born in Athens, Georgia, in 1893, he graduated Georgia Tech in 1915, and was a Student Engineer at General Electric in Schenectady, NY, at the start of the war. He set an aerodrome height record of 5,500 meters – 18,000 feet – on 21 April 1918 and saved the barograph record of his accomplishment which is shown below.
